Inside the Intermec Norand 6642

I have just received my Intermec Norand 6642. One of the first thing I want to do with it is to make an image of the hard drive, because I am going to attempt to install a newer operating system on it. The only way you can get to the hard drive is to take it apart.

I planned on posting some image of the effort. But already, I've found it on the web. Check out this Intermec Norand 6642 page, where you'll see its inside and you'll see a CompactFlash hack.

I finally gotten a chance to play with my Intermec Norand 6642. First thing I did was to take the hard drive out and make an image of it for safe keeping. It Was easy to take it apart. I simply removed all of the screws on the back cover, then lifted the back cover up. The hard drive was held down by a small silver screw. I tried to replace the hard drive with a larger capacity one, but the replacement drive was thicker than the original. So the back cover wouldn't fit with the thicker drive.

On other note, there is a memory slot with a 64MB PC100 memory module in it. I wonder if it is possible to use a bigger memory module.

In addition, the battery pack is a three cell version. It seems rather easy to replace knowing the voltage of each battery cell. Or remove the battery pack and reduce weight.
