Hard Disk SMART Failure Causes Laptop to Hang?

So my HP Pavilion dv6-3050us Entertainment Notebook had been in service for a long time. It used to run smoothly for weeks on end at a time. But recently, it had been hanging after a day or two.

And some times when I watch movies on it, it hangs in the middle of a movie. When I say hang, I mean the computer just gets stuck. Nothing else happens--no blue screen of death, no reboot. It just gets stuck where it got stuck. Sometime it will emit a loud audio tone; perhaps, it hung in the middle of playing sound, like watching a movie. The CPU fan runs at full speed when it hangs.

I hadn't been able to put my finger on it until last night, possibly. Last night the computer did not boot at all. BIOS reported a SMART failure. I ran the BIOS hard drive diagnostic and it showed "Hard Disk 1 SMART (301)" (see screen shot below), which meant there will be an imminent hard drive failure.

Perhaps the hard disk has been failing intermittently, causing the computer to hang. The hard drive is still in there and the computer, so far has been booting and running fine. I will use this this thread to keep track of the problem.
