HP DV6-3050US Overheats

I don't know what's going on with my HP Pavilion dv6-3050us Entertainment Notebook, but recently, it keeps shutting down after overheating. It never happened before. Another thing I noticed is that the fan is really loud; it's loud enough to be heard in the next room.

It seems that many DV6 users are experiencing the overheating problem. Some users are suggesting limiting the maximum processing power to 99%, rather 100%. In addition, they suggest changing cooling policy to "Passive", rather than "Active". Their suggestions seem to make a lot of sense.

You can change these advance settings in "Control Panel" -> "Hardware and Sound" -> "Power Options" -> "Change plan settings" -> "Change advanced power settings" -> "Processor power management". See screen shot below.

Hovering over the system cooling policy setting, I noticed that "Active" says, "Increase fan speed before slowing the processor". After changing to "Passive", it says, "Slow the processor before increasing fan speed". That's a sensible way to go, because the CPU may be overheating and increased fan speed may not help enough.

I also changed the maximum processor state to 99%. I have been monitoring the system after these changes. I will report how the computer performs with these changes.

The real culprit is dirty heat sinks and old CPU fan. After I replaced the CPU fan, cleaned out the heat sink fins, and re-pasted the thermal conductive compound for the CPU/heat sink, the notebook has been back to normal.
