Fixing the LCD hinges on the Averatec 3120VThe LCD hinges on the Averatec 3120V notebook seems particularly weak. Only after a year of usage, the screws that are holding the LCD together have worked themselves loose; even with blue lock-tight. My notebook was missing the screw on the right. As much trouble as the LCD was giving me, I still like the Averatec 3120V notebook a lot. It is super-slim, compact, and very easy to carry around. Considering that my Sony VAIO 505TS has lasted over seven years and are still in use today, I wanted to prolong the useable life of the Averatec 3120V. I took the only machine screw left on the LCD panel to Home Depot. But the machine screw was too small and a replacement is not available at the home improvement store. The closest is #4-40, an English machine screw that is slightly bigger than the metric screw from the 3120V. I bought a bag of #4-40 x 1/2" flat head slotted machine screws with nuts. I figured a slight mod to the LCD panel with stronger bolts and nuts will make the LCD panel more robust and easier to maintain. At home, I used a 3/32" drill bit to make the existing screw hole bigger. In addition, I drilled through the LCD panel. I did peak into the panel to make sure that there are no wires and circuit boards in the way. In the end, I was able to slide the #4-40 screw through the hole, shown in the picture below. I used a screwdriver and a set of pliers to tighten the nut. The LCD seems very sturdy now. And if the screw and nut is ever to loosen, I can always re-tighten it with household tools. And if the screw or nut gets lost? Well . . . Home Depot and Lowes has tons of these nut and screws. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
