Changing the Graphics Driver in XubuntuEver since putting together the "Super Digital Media Terminal" for my home, I've been keeping it turned on 24/7. I use it as a web server, a file server, and a host of other services while it's running. This week, I decided to upgrade its hard drive from 30 GB to 40 GB. Since I run this serve 24/7, I wanted to minimize the down time. Therefore, I reinstalled Xubuntu 6.1 on the 40 GB hard disk using an HP Omnibook 500 notebook computer. The installation was smooth. I was able to transfer all the data off the Super Digital Media Terminal and onto the Omnibook over the network. When it came time to swap the hard drive, everything was a breeze. The Super Digital Media Terminal (Sony VAIO PCG-505TS) booted up just fine. The only problem was that X server wouldn't start. See, the HP Omnibook 500 has the ATI Rage Mobility-M graphics chip set, while the Sony VAIO PCG-505TS has the NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD chip set. Switching to a terminal using the Ctrl-Alt-F2 combination, I was able to log in. To have Xubuntu re-configure the graphics card, issue the following command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg After going through a bunch of multiple choice questions, and selecting "VESA", the Sony VAIO PCG-505TS started up wonderfully with its X server.
