network shared storage

anyone got tips on what the best option for home network storage is? I am going to need to consolidate a lot of photographs from my wife's computer and my computer pretty soon. And I like to keep one single source of photos that we can both access relatively easily. My basic requirements are as follows...

1. must be accessible by 2 or more computer at the same time (both computers can write/read on it)
2. must be available without any of the client computers
3. should not require a computer by itself. basically i don't want to setup a 3rd computer and share the drive.

What would be the most cost effective means for me to achieve this?

what's your budget?

for $0 and if you have less than 2GB of photos (probably not) and don't mind storing your photos in the cloud, you can use dropbox (getdropbox.com). A local copy is cached on the computer, so it is not slow to access.

there are a lot of options for network accessible storage (some with drives and some don't):

here are 2 under $200 and come with 1TB:
Iomega 34337 1TB Home Media Network Hard Drive ($145)
Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N (White) ($200)

Definately, 2GB is too low. I need something where I can keep adding storage as my collection grows. It does not have to be available online.

That hp ex485 looks kick ass. I think that it would be a great solution but the price is a bit high. But I guess you get what you pay for. I wouldn't mind having something a bit less powerful but still with the ability to upgrade and swap drives.

So probably something between what charlie is recommending and what gnowk linked to on amazon would be good for me.

i know you said you didn't want to set up another PC, but since the ex485 appealed to you...

1) barebone pc ($120 after rebate)
MSI Black Wind PC

2) add RAM (2 gb is around $25)

3) hard drive (you can add up to 2 SATA drives)

4) install FreeNAS (www.freenas.org) or Windows Home Server (which hp ex485 uses), both of these can be run headless after the installation.

you can boot FreeNAS off of the compact flash drive, so the drives can power down when you're not using them.

Windows Home Server is around $100...

You need 2GB RAM for a file server? Might as well build yourself a game PC while you are at it. ;-)

there's only 1 slot for memory and 512 MB sticks cost around $10, so it's not that much more.
