Mixing DHCP and assigned IP on wireless networkUnknown to many, including myself for the longest time, is that even if you have DHCP enabled to dish out network IP addresses to client computers, it's also ok to use assigned IP's. With assigned IP, the client computer connects much faster to the network, without having to wait for the DHCP server. Also, the IP never changes. Many time, when I use assigned IP with a DHCP access point, I can get onto the web even before Windows XP shows that my computer is connected. To set-up assigned IP on a DHCP wireless network, you'll have to know the IP address of the network gateway (generally the wireless access point), the DNS server, and an IP address that hasn't already been assigned. So if your wireless access point is 10.0.0.1, then that's the value for "Default gateway" in the "Internet PRotocol (TCP/IP) Properties" dialog box. Your static assigned IP should be something like 10.0.0.x, where x is the address for your computer. You can pick any number between 1 and 254 as long as it hasn't already been assigned to anyone else. The "Subnet mask" should be 255.255.255.0, unless your network is set-up more complicated than the basic set-up.
