Free Public WiFi in Las VegasI've been in Las Vegas for an entire week, staying at the Excalibur hotel. Internet access at the Excalibur is not so costly compared to the other casinos; only $10.99 per day. None of the casinos provide free Internet. I suppose sitting in your hotel room all day, competes with the coin eating slots downstairs. But that doesn't stop me from seeking out free WiFi services. It's not that the price is unreasonable. It's just that I like to be able to move my computer around untethered to a wire. Also, I had brought my Samsung A900M and could get online with my wireless cellphone anytime I want; as matter of a fact, I'm on it to post this message. I really just want to see what Las Vegas has in term of free WiFi service for the public. So I pulled up Window's Wireless Network Connection dialog. This dialog has the ability to show all of the wireless networks in the vicinity and what types of network they are. One pop right out for my eyes, which is "Free Public WiFi" (see screen shot below). Sure sound like a wonderful public service. But rather than being an "Unsecured wireless network", it's an "Unsecured computer-to-computer networ". What the heck? An ad-hoc network? I have never connected to the Internet through an ad-hoc network before. So I connected to this "Free Public WiFi" access point successful. It did not provide an IP for me. And the static IP I assigned myself didn't get me anywhere. I couldn't get on the Internet, nor do I see any computers on the Windows network. So I'm kinda baffled. Why create an ad-hoc "Free Public WiFi" network? If it's a "Free Public WiFi", why not allow us to get on the Internet? If anyone has the answer, I'd love to hear it. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
