Where is fstab on Mac OS X?

I've been looking for /etc/fstab on Mac OS X for the past ten minutes. It's no where to be found. There is a /etc/fstab.hd file, but it contains the following message:

IGNORE THIS FILE
This file does nothing, contains no useful data, and might go away in future releases. Do not depend on this file or its contents.

I have no clue what this /etc/fstab.hd is for; apparently nothing.

It turned out that Darwin provides a safe manner to edit the /etc/fstab via its "vifs" utility, which you must run with "sudo". It creates the /etc/fstab for you the first time it runs.
