Ralink WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI "Any" SSID Trick

It's really awesome that Ralink provides Mac OS X driver for some of its wireless cards. However, these drivers could be better integrated with the Airport service. Instead, you must use its separate WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI software along with Network Preferences. The good news is that yesterday, I found a neat trick that would make your life easier when moving your notebook computer around.

Most wireless cards allows you to setup the driver so that you can associate with any SSID that it can connect to. Most of them uses the special "any" keyword in the SSID field. Unfortunately, this keyword does not work with WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI. After playing around with the software, I found that you can do the same with the WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI by creating a new profile, but leaving the SSID field empty (shown in the screen shot below). With this profile activated, your notebook WiFi will associate itself to any accessible access point.

I have this utility card software and was told I needed to delete the SSID to keep from getting constantly disconnected. Unfortunately there is no SSID setting anywhere.

I'm using the "WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI Version 1.7.1.0 (1.7.1.0) with OS 10.5.8 and an Airlink 101 pci card

Any suggestions?
