Mac OS X questionsHow do you execute a program in Find with the keyboard? For example, how I do start TextEdit once I have it selected with the arrow keys? How do I keep the host name from changing on 10.5.4? Chieh Cheng 1) open apple + down arrow (have you tried quicksilver for launching programs yet?) 2) i have only experienced the 2nd problem with the wind, don't know how to fix it. if you're running a local dns server, just assign a hostname for it. gnowk Thanks. I can't have work-arounds like that. I need Darwin to stick to one host name. Chieh Cheng there are actually 2 instances that i know of where host names get change: 1) when the wind wakes up, it says something to the effect "host name foobar has already been taken, foobar-2 will be used instead". the host name it is referring to is the local network name for the computer used by Bonjour (this host name has .local appended to it) 2) the host name also changes depending on the type of network connection it's using. I get one host name when i use my wireless connection and another one when i use my wired connection. you can use the shell command hostname to set / get this value. which one is changing on you? gnowk My says "Flyer.local". I can use hostname to change it to whatever I want. However, it always changes when I dial out on my phone. Where is the string "Flyer" defined in Mac OS X? Is there a way to read this value out of Mac OS X some how? Chieh Cheng it's set at System Preferences => Sharing gnowk Thanks. I tried to use "defaults" to read the value out. However, I can't find the domain for Sharing. Is there a way to get it out of the Preferences screen through the command-line? Chieh Cheng system_profiler -detailLevel basic | grep "Computer Name" | sed -e 's/.*: //' There might be a better way. gnowk That's excellent. Thanks. Chieh Cheng
