usermod fails with "user is currently logged in"

Today, I needed to move a user's home directory from "/home" to "/export" on CentOS 6.4. It should have been a piece cake with the following command:


  usermod -d /export/xyz/ xyz

However, usermod produced the following error message:


  usermod: user xyz is currently logged in

Using the command 'w' showed that the user xyz was not logged in. I was forced to reboot the machine before I was able to perform that task. Anyone know what causes this problem?
