Ubuntu 7.1 doesn't work with manually configured wireless network

I have recently installed Ubuntu 7.1 on my laptop computer, because I have heard that it has integrated Bluetooth support and that it support many more wireless network card natively. While both statements are true, I found that it could not connect to my home wireless network. My home wireless network uses static IP address, without a DHCP server (so that not anyone can connect). But I found that Ubuntu 7.1 does not work when I manually configure the wireless network card to use static IP without security key (haven't tried it with security key. On the other hand, at a hotel on a business trip, I found that the wireless network works just fine with DHCP.

It seems to be a problem with Ubuntu 7.1, because the same notebook with the same wireless network adapter works just fine with Ubuntu 7.06. I've also tried a brand new wireless network card last night and the same symptom persists. Anyone know why manually configured wireless network does not work on Ubuntu 7.1? Any idea how to get it to work?

Just installed Xubuntu 7.1 on a different notebook and a different network card. Manually configured wireless network works just fine with Xubuntu 7.1 and this hardware configuration. Strange.
