Ubuntu 13.04 Desktop File Restrictions

A few month ago, I showed you how to use "Relative Path with Linux .desktop Files". Back then, I complained about the desktop having more and more limitations. Only a few month later, when I installed Ubuntu 13.04 that I realized they even took away the luxury of being about to use relative paths.

Even in Ubuntu 12.10, you are able to specify the full path, but use "./script" to execute it. That's no longer the case with Ubuntu 13.04. In the latest Ubuntu, you have to specify the full path in both the "Exec" field and the "Path" field. The following is an example of a desktop file that works in Ubuntu 13.04:

It makes you wonder how much harder they are going to make Ubuntu in the future in the name of security. Funny thing is, I spend more time working around these security check points than dealing with "real" malware on my Linux installations.
