Ubuntu: Enable Execution on FAT and NTFS VolumesThe first thing I noticed, after using Ubuntu 12.10, was that I couldn't execute shell script off a USB drive. One trick I had used in the past few years was to automate the setup of new OS installs via scripts on a portable USB drive. Ubuntu 12.10 eliminate my ability to do that by disallowing execution of my installation BASH script in the kernel in the name of security. Really!? When is my computer ever going to face such a security risk? By putting someone's virus-infected USB drive into my single-user computer? After searching around online, I was able to find a way to patch the Ubuntu kernal to allow execution on FAT and NTFS volumes (majority of USB drive format). It basically patch the udisks daemon. I wrapped the commands in a brainless BASH script so that you can I can easily run it on any Ubuntu installation. The script is attached below. This script has been tested on Ubuntu 12.10. It is possible that it will work on other versions of Ubuntu or Linux, but it hasn't been tested in that manner. Use it at your own risk or modify it so that it works for you. Chieh Cheng
