OpenOffice 2.4 can be installed by end-userI'm really happy to see that OpenOffice 2.4 can be installed by an end-user (without administration rights) on an ancient SUSE Linux 9.0. The OpenOffice 1.1 that came with it is just unbearable any longer. And I have been hesitant to try a newer version of OpenOffice, because I am not the system administrator. But today, it installs just fine with an easy to follow setup GUI. Now, I just need to figure out how to run it, which hasn't been an easy task so far. Chieh Cheng It's no wonder Windows still sells better than Linux. I still can't figure out how to run OpenOffice 2.4. It doesn't show up in the KDE application menu. So I have gone into the installation directory, which has no executables other than "setup". But I have managed to find the "program" directory under there with tons of files. Using the following command, I generated a list of executables in that directory.
List of executables: cde-open-url* Man, nothing stands out that screams "OpenOffice". But "soffice" looks promising. I really have my hope up when I ran it, only to be greeted with the following error message: Inconsistency detected by ld.so: ../sysdeps/generic/dl-tls.c: 72: _dl_next_tls_modid: Assertion `result <= _rtld_local._dl_tls_max_dtv_idx' failed! Gee. Nothing's easy when you don't have the rights to wipe your computer and put in the latest operating system. I'm going to have to dig into this some more to figure it out. Chieh Cheng Well, I gave up OpenOffice 2.4 for now. Just tried to uninstall it by running setup and even that was giving me problems: /var/tmp/install_27054/usr/java/jre1.6.0_04/bin/java -DHOME=/home/woody/ccheng -DJRE_FILE=jre-6u4-linux-i586.rpm -jar JavaSetup.jar Good thing I already have Java installed. I got around the problem by issuing the following command: java -jar JavaSetup.jar Chieh Cheng change the line jarfilename="JavaSetup.jar" to jarfilename="`pwd`/JavaSetup.jar" in setup. It is one of the first few lines. Matt Brin
