Minimalist Text Editor on UbuntuI have just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my first generation netbook. I really like this new version as a desktop operating system, because it is now at a stage where it is consumer friendly on par with Windows and Mac OS X. However, I found it to be quite taxing on the netbook, unlike Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.5.8. Nevertheless, it is still usable and the more performance I can squeeze out of it, the better. The default text editor, gedit, is just too slow to launch on my netbook. Although gedit has many features, I hardly use any of them. I'm a minimalist when it comes to text editing. I want the text editor to have a GUI, load up fast, let me edit my text, can save quickly, and can disappear in a flash. Not much more than that (ok, I need a few other features). But gedit provides too much and is too slow. The best minimalist text editor I found is "mousepad". This little gem has the bare minimal features and loads up extremely quickly. I even use it on my ancient 300 MHz computer (yes, you read that correctly, it's an original Pentium), and it does the trick. So, the next time you need a quick and easy text editor on Linux, try "mousepad". Use the following command on the command-line (minimalist way to install things) to install it on Ubuntu: "sudo apt-get -y install mousepad". Alternatively, you can take the resource exhausting method of installing via "Ubuntu Software Center". Mel
