Enabling NTFS Write Support in Ubuntu 7.04

In my recent research, I've learned that Linux now has native NTFS read and write support. There is no need to play tricks, such as installing Windows NTFS drivers in wrappers. Now that Ubuntu 7.04 has came such a long way, I wondered if it has native NTFS support.

So I plugged my NTFS USB drive into my Ubuntu 7.04 laptop. The drive showed up in Ubuntu right away. And I was able to access the drive without any problem. But when I tried to write to the drive, Ubuntu reported that the volume is a read-only system.

I understand that the latest stable Linux NTFS write drivers is the NTFS-3G drive. And there is a simple GUI-based configuration tool. I searched for NTFS-3G in the Synaptic Package Manager and found both ntfs-3g and ntfs-config. You can install the driver by typing the following on the command-line:

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config

After installing the Linux NTFS driver, I plugged in my external NTFS drive again. But the same problem persisted. It turns out that the NTFS-3G driver disable the write capability on external drives by default. To enable the write capability, run the configuration tool by typing the following command:

gksu ntfs-config

Then check the "Enable write support for external device" option as shown in the screen shot below. After that you will be able to write to your NTFS drives.
