iPAQ hidden screen capturer

HP/Compaq iPAC Pocket PC comes with a software called iTask. You can bring this application up by pressing the fourth button from the left on the bottom of the iPAQ.

Unknown to me until just a few minutes ago, iTask actually came with a screen capturing utility. The screen capturer is hidden until you add them to the iTask menu. And I had spent the last few days looking for a free one on the internet.

To enable the screen capturer utility, tap on the left-most button in iTask to bring up the menu. Then tap on "iTask Settings". You will be presented with the screen below.

There are two menu itmes that are unassigned at this point: "3: Unassigned" and "10: Unassigned". I suggest you take advantage of these two menu item slots for the screen capturing utility.

The utility have two functions: "Capture" and "Delay Capture". Number of functions fits perfectly with the number of unassigned menu item slots. It's interesting that HP, Compaq, or Microsoft didn't just assign them to the menus from day 1. Seems like a nifty feature that many users can take advantage of.

Tap on the down arrow in the "Replace With:" slot causes the screen to show three folders: Internal, Programs, and Settings. Tap on the plus [+] symbol next to the Internal folder. You'll be presented with the screen shown below. Noticed the Capture and Delay Capture items.

Tap on the Capture item to assign it to the menu slot (see picture below). When you are done, tap the Apply button.

Now repeat the above process for the Delay Capture function. Place it in "10: Unassigned" menu slot.

When you have finished assigning both menu items, tap ok button on the top right. Now when ever you bring up the iTask menu, you will see the Capture and Delay Capture function show up.

Using the Capture Utility

Tapping Capture causes the iTask application to disappear. The screen is then immediately captured.

Tapping Delay Capture causes the iTask application to disappear. The capturing utility waits about 2 to 3 seconds before actually capturing the screen. This wait allows you to open up menus, setting up the screen, or whatever is necessary to get the screen that you want.

The captured files are stored in the root directory (My Device) of your iPAQ. It has the file name Captxxxx.bmp, where xxxx is a 4-digit number starting at 0000. The number continues and does not reset until reaching 9999.
