not bad for $250...

would you get one?

I was just telling a friend that you can get a Pandigital Novel for $150 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. And you can apply the 20% coupon on that to get it even less. It is easy to hack to reveal the underlying Android.

Why is the Nook Color worth $100 more?

better hardware (better proc, higher res, more RAM, more storage, capacitive touch screen, etc)...

Couldn't you say the same about the Galaxy S tablet? Why not get that tablet then?

Or are you basically saying you are willing to get the best you can get for $250 and that's your limit?

if price is no objection, sure...

you asked why it's worth a $100 more.

My point is... you asked whether you should get it. Therefore, my question is to get you to think what is your criteria. Everything you listed in your response isn't your real criteria, otherwise you'd get the Galaxy S tablet. So let me ask you point blank: Why do you want the Nook Color and what is your real criteria?

I never asked if I should get one, but $250 is a price I'm comfortable with paying for the given spec.

That wasn't what you asked previously, Chieh. Rather, it does seem like you were trying to answer gnowk's original question through not directly. It was a grave mistake on gnowk's part for not recognizing it as I did.

you asked why Nook Color and not the Pandigital Novel which is $100 less for reak pointed out. Hence, it explains why NC is worth the premium. You would consider the PN but not necessarily the NC.

Then, you attempted to answer gnowk's question for a second time which gnowk again failed to recognize it as such was when you presented another alternative, the Tab.

But the price points are as trivial as you made you out to be. $100 here, $200 there. NC is cost more than PN because of the technology behind NC. As for NC and the Tab being comparable except for the cameras and commanding a larger pricing gap between itself and NC ( ($270+a larger tax difference) than NC and PN ($100), it stands to reason that for the technical advantages of the NC and the relative price differences, the NC is a better choice.

During our conservation when you presented this device to me, I've stated that the PN uses tech that is much older than a modern OS like the Android is worth running on. Resistive screens being used aside, the CPU and memory just aren't enough to get an adequate mobile experience.

The question posed by gnowk isn't if he should get it but if the rest of us would consider it ("would you get one?). For gnowk, his answer is no to PN and the Tab but NC is a tempting acquisition ("$250 is a price I'm comfortable with paying for the given spec"). But had he been asking the question of himself, the question would have been "should I get the Nook Color".

So as a question posed by gnowk, for whatever needs or mobile scenarios that exist, is it safe to infer from the information you've provided, you would choose between the Tab or the PN but not NC?

Personally, I think the NC is a worthy Android tablet at its price. The PN is woefully inadequate. Performance deficiencies aside, it's battery life is good for six hours of reading but I'm gonna go out of a limb and say that anything that requires and static text, that battery life will drop dramatically. The Tab isn't twice more powerful than NC because it's technology is already dated by more than year and yet, it commands a premium price. Tab 2 is rumored to be coming out within months if not weeks. Tab 2, which uses Samsung's own CPU, will need to compete with Nvidia's Tegra 2 and the iPad 2 in the spring.

Should the Tab drop to $250 without contract during that time without a mandatory 2-year life sentence, heck, I would consider it :)

You are pretty close in your analysis of my thinking. Unfortunately I won't be able to respond to each of your point because I am on my phone throughout this conversation. So bear with me.

The PN is worthy consideration because it is close to the the $100 price point. The Galaxy S is worth consideration because it's got everything you want (yes, you might want a dual-core, but it's vaporware currently) and need.

But the NC has no real value yet. At least none that I can see. At $250, there are a whole array of android tablets to choose from. Many meets or exceeds its spec. And many don't require a hack. A quick look at www.dealextreme.com (last time I looked was several month ago) will show that one should spend more time on NC's value. So to me, there is no value-added to NC and it is not a deal. As you pointed out, you get what you paid for. Therefore, for me to get the NC, there has to be a purpose. Currently, I have none for this $250 device. Hence, my question to David on his goals.

As for "resistive" screen, it is not worth mentioning. There are too many connotations based on myth. I actually found value in a "resistive" screen, because I thought it means I can use a stylus with it. Therefore, I got the Samsung Intercept SPH-M910 (it has a resistive screen) with the goal of passing it down to my kids so that they can use a "pen" with it. As I found out, contrary to popular believe, you can implement touch resistive screen that doesn't require stylus-like pressure. And in fact the Samsung Intercept is insensitive to stylus. My kids will be disappointed. And I am disappointed that the entire industry has moved away from stylus. The Samsung Intercept, on the other hand works just fine as a touch device.

Moral is that cool things may not have value. Value-added items may not be cool. What is your goal for a device? What is your purpose for NC?
