Escape on the Belkin Wireless PDA Keyboard

I'm sitting here in Tapioca Express (a coffee shop like store that sells tapioca beverages), accessing my web server through my Verizon XV6700 PDA Camera Phone. It's a fun experience, but don't ask me why I'm sitting here by myself on a Friday night managing my web server instead of enjoying the atmosphere with my friends.

So I'm sitting here running PocketPuTTY, having a good time using my favorite text editor, vi, over ssh. But just when I'm done and ready to push the ESCAPE key . . . Where the HELL is the ESCAPE key!?

Apparently the ESCAPE key isn't needed on a Pocket PC or a PDA, so it isn't available on the Belkin Wireless PDA Keyboard, nor it is available on the Verizon XV6700's built-in keyboard. So I thought I'm screwed.

Luckily I remember a trick from old Computer Science days. You see, a long time ago, ESCAPE isn't a separate key on the keyboard. It was actually emulated with ctrl-[. Yes, pushing Ctrl and the left bracket produces the "escape sequence".

So, with my fingers crossed in my mind, I pushed Ctrl and '[' simultaneously. Viola! It worked. The good old escape sequence still works today. ;-)
