Techno and Rave Tips for Beat Hazard

I just picked up the Beat Hazard games off Valve Steam for about seven to eight bucks. It's a very innovative game where the sequence of play is based on the beat of your very own music. I've always wanted to integrated my favorite music tracks to the games I play. And Beat Hazard is the first game I've played where my music actually changes the game play.

My favorite musics are techno and raves. After playing a few hours with my favorite music tracks, I gathered some tips and techniques to get past this type of music. In this thread, I will document these techniques.

Build Multiplier During Quiet Times

Techno and rave tend to start real slow, especially if you listen to "progressive" rave. That means you could have up to 45 seconds to more than a minute of non-existant firepower, which will not help you blow up the asteroids. Instead of wasting your bullets, avoid firing to build up "Dare Devil" that increase your multiplier. After the beat gets going, it's rather easy to blow your enemy away.

On tracks where the quiet period is especially long, ten or more enemy spaceships could be drifting on the screen. You'll have to use your piloting skill to avoid them and blow the away slowly while collecting power ups.

Save at Least One Smart Bomb for the End

Must like the beginning, most techno and rave die down slowly, meaning that you can have enemy coming at you in the last 10 seconds of the game. You have no firepower without much of a beat. The easiest way to clear them is with a smart bomb.

On music tracks where the quiet ending is especially long, you may need to save more than one smart bombs for the end.

Know Your Music

Playing with music you know is obviously advantages to you. Because it allows you to time the quiet times and know whether to shoot or build up "Dare Devil".

Crosshair on the Boss

With techno and rave, where the beat comes in especially strong, Beat Hazard usually brings in the boss many times throughout the song. I have had a boss on the screen as early as 45 seconds into the music on one song.

When the boss does show up, keep the crosshair on one of the two wings. That keeps your bullets flying in the right direction. After blowing away one wing, switch to the other wing.

Know Thy Enemy's Firepower

In Beat Hazard, when the enemy fires at you, each type of weapon makes a different sound. By learning the sound, you can easily anticipate what kind of weapon they are firing at you and use different techniques to avoid them.

Get Close to the Boss

When the boss explodes, it tends to leave a lot of power-ups and multipliers behind. Time your attack. When the boss is about to blow, start moving close to it so that you can quickly pick up the power-ups.
