PlanetSide 2: Teamwork Wins!

My friend and I tried PlanetSide 2 beta for the first time tonight. We had come from the world of Battlefield 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, where squad team work at level 25 trumps individual level 50 players. And tonight, it proved true once again in PlanetSide 2.

The two of us with a ton of Terran Republic comrades were defending The Crown to the death. The Vanu Sovereignty used all their tacts to capture our base, but our resistance was strong. Much of the time, The Crown was cut off from the rest of the TR territories. We started with just the two of us on the squad. Eventually more players joined our rank.

As energetic daylight vanished into wary night, we noticed that neighboring territories were unguarded by the New Conglomerate. Therefore, we decided to slowly make our way to capture the base. My friend was in a MAX armored suit and I supported him as an engineer. A few of our squad members noticed our move and worked their way toward the same direction. Other non-squad comrades also joined us, which gave me comfort for the backup.

Half way to the enemy base, we were waylaid, in dimming surrounding, by two enemy snipers on top of a plateau. I thought that was going to be the end of our adventure. But I spotted the two snipers. My friend's MAX unit provided suppression fire support. Our sniper squad member attempted to reverse snipe the enemy. Several other TR members joined our fight.

After a few minutes of stalemate fire fight, the enemy jumped off the plateau and headed for their base. We picked them off one by one with our assorted skills. A win for our squad diversity.

Our squad members pinged me for ammo. I had completely forgotten about it in the middle of the fire fight. I hastily dropped an ammo pack as we moved onward toward the enemy base. A aircraft challenged us on the way, but the anti-aircraft gun on the MAX scared it away. The base was ours with little resistance.

Lesson of the day: when your squad travels long distance in pack, always take a MAX and an engineer as support. We had zero casualties on this remote mission tonight, but a medic is always a welcome on our squad.

Title: Battlefield Series is the Training Ground for PlanetSide 2
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: Reading the PlanetSide 2 forums, it's apparent that PlanetSide 2 has a huge learning curve. After all, what FPS games require a squad of ten, a platoon of three squads, and an outfit of platoons? But that reminds me of the tedious hours our premade team spent in the Battlefield games. Starting with . . .
