PlanetSide 2: Getting All the Advantage You Can Get on Your EnemiesWhile reading the PlanetSide 2 forums, I came across a 'Low "Graphics Quality" offers a significant advantage' thread. Following is a quote from the original poster: Setting just the "Graphics Quality" option to low instantly removes dust, fog and increases the clarity of your game substantially. This effect is even increased at dusk and night, as it removes the glowing from terminals and removes all harsh light reflections. Although I haven't validated the original poster's claim in PlanetSide 2, I believe s/he is correct on this matter, because I have seen it before. I found this phenomenon years ago on my low-end laptop while playing Left 4 Dead; see my thread about "Eliminate the Spookiness of Left 4 Dead". On such a laptop with all of the setting turned to low, the dark, spooky lighting effect is completely gone. All you have left is evenly lit rooms and corridors where all of the zombies are clearly visible. (An image in that thread demonstrates this effect clearly.) It's not so fun to play this way on Left 4 Dead, because, after all, you bought this PvE (player versus environment) game for the chill and suspense; you are not competing with anyone. On the other hand, in PvP games, where you are battling enemy combatants to the death in a competition, it's a different story. After all, like any sport competition, every little bit counts. If you don't understand that, think of bicycle races where even the men will shave their arms and legs to squeeze out an edge. Since then, I've used the same trick on other first person shooters like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Setting the graphics setting to low not only eliminates visibility issues, but it improves the frame rate greatly and reduces lag. In Battlefield 3 and PlanetSide 2, on my gaming hardware, I could only squeeze out 30 FPS on the lowest setting. It would be detrimental to set graphics to high, so that I can enjoy the scenery while taking hits from the inability to respond with low frame rate. A friend of mine even suggested a more extreme measure. And that is to set the screen resolution to the lowest setting. On Quake III Arena, where he set the screen resolution to 640x480, he was able to ace even the hardest bots because lower resolution on the same screen size means bigger pixels. Thus, less mouse movement and easier to target critical hit-boxes (head shots). Even I cringe at the thought of setting screen resolution that low. Currently I can't stand anything less than max resolution of my monitor (1920x1080). So, I have to live with 30 FPS on the highest resolution with the lowest graphics setting in PlanetSide 2. But maybe one day I will try the 1024x768 resolution that PlanetSide 2 suggested when I installed the game. So if you are having a hard time seeing the enemy because of lighting and atmosphere particle effects or can't respond because of low frame rate, give these suggestions a try. You might be surprised how well you can perform in PlanetSide 2 in this manner. On the other hand, if you have an super gaming machine that can ran PlanetSide 2 at insane screen resolution at 100 frames per second with graphics settings turned all the way up, you might consider doing just that to handicap yourself slightly and give us little people a chance at winning. Fido
