Should Diablo 3 be Regulated Like a Casino? Many folks have attribute the addictiveness of games like Diablo, Diablo 2, Diablo 3, Hellgate: London, and the like to their slot machine effect. As you progress through the game, killing monsters, random loot continues to drop. One minute you might find an scrap metal, the next minute, you pick up an epic sword. And anyone who has ever bought an in-game item will tell you, the epic sword is worth far more than the scrap metal (in both in game money and real life money). The only difference between Diablo 3 and these other slot machine games is that the loot is actually worth real money (real money auction house). In turn, while other games are like slot machines, Diablo 3 is a real life slot machine! Getting past the facade of the fantasy game, Diablo 3 is really Blizzard's virtual casino front. You pay $60 entry fee (for the game), then the loot come back as a 85% pay out (assuming in-game commodities where Blizzard charges 15% broker fee). The only difference? You don't have to keep putting money into the slot machine, unless you want to. Whereas virtual casinos are not legal in the United States, Blizzard is selling this game by the millions all over the world. So how is Blizzard getting around the virtual casino regulation? Fido Wikipedia article on Diablo 3 also pointed this out: "In order to get rated in South Korea, Blizzard has agreed to drop the real-money auction house from the Korean release of the game as the auction house violated Korean anti-gambling laws.[33]" Jake
