Diablo 3 Starts the In-Game Money Making Trend

Blizzard has been notorious for having sequels that are ten years in the making. And when the sequels are just marginally different or marginally better, you kind of have to wonder why? Diablo 3 falls in this category with its game play, graphics, and user interface. But there is one novelty that separates it from its Blizzard sequel peers. and that is its real money auction house.

This article won't go into much detail about the Diablo 3 real money auction house, because there are tons of articles on the Internet about it, so anyone can look it up. But this article will focus on why a person who never buys Blizzard sequels, such as myself, decided to go out to Best Buy to purchase Diablo 3 today.

Anyone who has an iPhone or an Android phone would know that the SmartPhone app market is huge. People are snapping up $0.99 game apps fifty time faster than paying $49.99 for a game in one shot. Blizzard is bring that same marketplace into Diablo 3 using the real money auction house. When you sell commodities, you pay Blizzard a 15% fee. When you transfer real money out to PayPal, Blizzard charges another 15% fee. Combined, that's 30% fee, which is the same that Apple AppStore and Google play charges developer when selling an app. Blizzard is playing the in-game item broker, much like Apple and Android is playing the mobile app broker. With this train of thought, it's quite easy to see that Blizzard is trying to be the next Apple/Google in the PC gaming arena.

Seeing this trend, it's easy for someone who never buys Blizzard sequels to purchase Diablo 3. It's likely that this innovation is the future to gaming. Blizzard is not the first one, because folks have already sat-up real estate agencies in Second Life. But Diablo 3 is the first game that could achieve mobile app-like status for gaming. And to stay up and up with the in-game marketplace trend, nothing beats actually trying it out.

Question is, which game is going to have in-game marketplace next?

Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: In This Video Game, You Can Make Real Cash Through Virtual Trading I was originally going to skip over Diablo III altogether, much like StarCraft II. And considering that the original Diablo team has already given us Hellgate--a new loot generation machine--that is currently a global free 2 play, I' . . .
