First Impression on Torchlight IIRunic Games was kind enough to provide me with a beta key yesterday. After downloading and installing the game, I gave it a whirl to see what the hype is about with regards to this game. At first, the game launched at 1680x1050 resolution. I was afraid that was the highest resolution of the game. But it was easy to change to 1920x1080. The game ran without any problem at this resolution. Much like everyone says, the game plays just like a Diablo clone. You click the mouse to move, you click to attack. There are some short cut keys, but you can perform everything with a mouse. The interface is practically identical to Diablo. Except you can increase or shrink the UI size. For the Outlander class (ranged character), I found that the bottom UI gets in the way of monsters. So I shrunk the UI all the way. It sacrifices readability, but in a click and hack game, the UI is not all that necessary. The pet that comes with your character is nice. It reduces the time spent looking for a henchman. And it can take your loot back to town to sell and bring items back on the your shopping list. It's a really innovative way to deal with hack, hack, hack, travel back to town. I played multiplayer with two other friends. One of them was playing the Engineer class. With three characters, three pets, and a robot on the screen, it's quite easy to get confused on friends or foes. In multiplayer Runic should provide a feature to send your pet back to town for good and recall it when needed. The game have a slightly happier tone than Diablo. It uses blue and green extensively versus the black used in Diablo. The character and monsters are all cartoon-like. For people who complain about sexy appeal in games, this is the game for them. Having played League of Legends for quite a while, I'm more used to unlocking the camera from being centered on the character. I wish there is a way to do that with Torchlight 2. Lots of times, I click on a monster, as my character (and camera) move, I mis-click, causing my character to move some more. The speed of my character is too fast, so I end up running around in circles on the map as I try to "aim" my clicks on the monster. Fido
