Eliminate the Spookiness of Left 4 Dead

Today, I got Left 4 Dead working on my laptop. Now I can travel and enjoy a night of mindless slaughter. And it gave me a glimpse of playing Left 4 Dead without being spooked. With the graphics setting completely lowered to the lowest level, the game looked like a cartoon. There was no darkness of any kind. I immediately turned off the flashlight and was able to see every unlit room, dim hallway, and dark corners clearly. In addition to being able to play it without the spooky lighting effect, it seemed the perfect way to play the game if you want to know everything about the map.

The following screen shot shows the witch running at me in the un-spooky setting. When you can see her clearly, she is not so spooky after all.

Chieh you are such a wimp. What we need is more spookiness, more dread and more darkness! Some necromancer, you'd probably get scared by your own shadow!

Chieh, I have this exact same issue with the 6150! I was really excited that I could even play the damn game, but now I realize I am missing half the experience! Any thoughts on how to get it darker - I messed with all the settings and couldn't make it work. Please help, any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Unfortunately, I don't know how to make it spookier either. It seems like the setting necessary to make it spooky will cause the game to not work on the laptop. I haven't tried all the settings yet. Have you? Maybe start with 640x480 resolution and adjust the rest of the settings.

Thanks for the quick response! I appreciate that you took the time to help me out. I tried setting all the options as high as possible and it still seemed very bright (I went down the stairs from the roof and the apartment kitchen was well-lit - I don't think that's how it is supposed to be).

My only other thought was to try to adjust some of the cvar options - maybe the -dxlevel? I heard that DX 8 was eliminated in this version of the source engine, but I wonder if reducing it from DX 9.0c to 9.0 might help (I think the command is -dxlevel 90 for DX 9 and -dxlevel 95 for DX9c).

Let me know if you have any other thoughts - I really want this game to work, I might just get the full version in the hopes that something will be improved!

Thanks again, Chieh-

It's worth a try. Does the demo still work? The full game is now available and when I double-click on the demo, it won't let me play it.

I played the full version with my friend last night. It was a lot of fun.

I think even if we can't get the spookiness on the laptop, it is still an enjoyable game . . . if it runs fast enough.

Title: Left 4 Dead on a Laptop
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: I had a chance to try Left 4 Dead on my laptop today, which is a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC dv6119us with a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150. At first, the graphics was completely messed up and unplayable. After trying different video settings I found that you have to disable "WAIT FOR VERTICAL SYNC".
