Lucrative Aftermarket Replacement PartsYesterday, I was merrily at work and my worst nightmare happened. I received a call from my wife. It was not that my wife calling me at work was a bad thing. It was just that she hardly ever does. So as soon as I saw, on my cellphone, that the call was from my wife, I knew she was in trouble. My wife was at work that day. And her work was about fifty miles from where we lived. She had called because the engine bay started smoking. She parked the car (smart girl) right away in a parking lot behind the bank. She has a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi with a nice 2.5 liter turbo engine. I wouldn't want such an awesome to blow up. It's a $5000 replacement and one I have wanted to install in my 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS for a long time. It was high probability that one of the radiator hoses had bursted. A few nights ago, I had seen a huge puddle of water in the garage. And I had known there was something wrong with the car. But after being busy with housework, I had completely forgotten about it. Today, I started search for replacement radiator hoses. Afterall, it can't be that much, right? Right and wrong. Searching for "STi radiator hose" on Google yielded many results. The top two results was "Samco WRX STi Radiator Coolant Hose Kit [SAM TCS135C]" sold by RallySportDirect for $111.38! Second result was "Agency Power Subaru WRX/STI Radiator Hose Kit AP-GDA-151" for $128.99. Holy @#$%! I can buy some kitchen plumbing hoses at Home Depot or Lowes for a few bucks and bend them into the shape I need for the car. Luckily, I found some replacement radiator hoses at Kragen. The "Goodyear Upper Radiator Coolant Hose 62613" was only $15.99. And the "Goodyear Lower Radiator Coolant Hose 62564" was only $11.99. Total cost would be $27.98. These are in boring black. And the $100 hoses are quite colorful; yellow, red, and blue. But is the color worth over three to four times the price? You be the judge. Chieh Cheng Found instructions for installing the STi Performance Radiator Hoses. I've attached the PDF below. This instructions are going to come in handy when I change them out.
