Installing Chinese Big5 and GB2312 Fonts on OLPC XO

This past week, I wanted to use the OLPC XO as a ebook reader to read bedtime stories to my kids. And I happen to want to read a classic chinese folklore (yes, the stone monkey one). But when I brought up the Chinese Big5-encoded text on the browser, the character rendered like mahjong pieces; unreadable. So I spend some time figuring out how to install Chinese fonts on the OLPC XO. And here is how . . .

Download the four TrueType fonts from this page: Traditional Chinese. This page has all the fonts; just no instruction on how to install them. The fonts are store in the ".tar.gz" archives you downloaded. Use the following four commands to extract the files into directories:

tar xvfz ttf-arphic-bsmi00lp_2.10.orig.tar.gz

tar xvfz ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp_2.11.orig.tar.gz

tar xvfz ttf-arphic-gkai00mp_2.11.orig.tar.gz

From each of the four directories that were created through the extraction process, take out the ".ttf" files. Once you have these four TrueType font files, you can trash the four directories. Now, use the following commands to install these font files:

mkdir "/usr/share/fonts/Arphic PL"

mv *.ttf "/usr/share/fonts/Arphic PL"

exit

After you have installed these fonts, you can start the browser activity and it will be able to render Chinese text.
