inside a fluorescent light bulbWhat's inside a fluorescent light bulb? I've wondered that recently. With a incandescent light bulb, the electricity travels over a filament, making it hot, thus lighting it. Does the fluorescent light bulb work the same way? Attached Image: Chieh Cheng Recently, one of my fluorescent light bulb stopped working. After five years of faithful service, it would no longer turn on. So I was quite excited to start experimenting with it. I cracked the glass on the bulb to see what's inside. To my disappointment, there is nothing inside . . . So how does it work? Attached Image: Chieh Cheng Gas my good man. Gas. To put in VERY simply, electrons (current) is ran through several gases that react to produce light with very little (if noticable at all) heat. This light I believe is closer to the ultra violet spectrum, thus its different colored glow. Justin Phelps The fluorescent light bulb doesn't have a current wire that produces light. Instead, the gas must be excited by electrons. So how does the fluorescent light bulb excite the gas? With lots of electronic components (see picture). Complicated circuitry is needed to power a fluorescent lightbulb, unlike the conventional incandescent light bulb. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
